You will need your math book to study for the test.  Below you will find pages of your math book with problems similar to the problems on the test.

• Plotting sailboats on page 301.  Plotting a reflected figure as you did for New Sailboat 3 and knowing the rule for changing points of the original figure to get the reflected figure. 
• Know the difference between perimeter, area, and volume. 
• Know the meaning of perimeter, area, and volume.
• Finding the area of triangles and parallelograms.  Label the height and base of triangles and parallelograms. Page 310, 312, 313, 330.
• Finding the volume of a prism made from centimeter cubes.  Page 332 #1, Page 307 #2, Page 303 #3, Page 299 #2, Page 295 #3   Be able to find the area of the base and the height of the prism made from centimeter cubes.
• Find the volume of prisms.  Page 322, 324, and 325.

Unit 8 Assessment

Math/Science Update 1/29

MATH

Welcome to the second semester of 5th grade.  Students just completed their study of unit 5 in math class where they reviewed the meanings of fractions, decimals and percent notations for rational numbers.  We focused on the conversion among these notations, often emphasizing the fact that embedded in every fraction is a division problem.  These fractions concepts will be further explored in the latter half of unit 6 which we will begin today.  We will start reviewing data landmarks and methods for organizing data.  Students will be provided with a variety of experiences with displaying and analyzing data.  

SCIENCE

We are in the midst of exploring geology in science class.  We are asking the questions:

What is Below Our Feet? How Does It Get There?  Through readings, videos and rock and mineral observations, students are learning about the properties of rocks and minerals and how rocks form and change over time.

Learning Celebration on November 25th

Dear Parents,

You are invited to to celebrate our learning on November 25th at 9:00 am in the Black Box Theater. We will kickoff the celebration with a presentation and then students will share their learning and final products.

The 5th grade has been busy working a science unit that required students to research health practices/advice that are controversial even within the medical profession. For example: running is good for you or eating meat is bad for you.

Students then connected their learning about the healthy statement back to a body system.

Along with their science books, three health experts who have graciously lent their time to talk to our students about their research projects, and websites such as Webmd, the MayoClinic, KidsHealth the students discovered a lot of information about their healthy statement.  Through identifying their initial statement, generating focused questions, conducting the research, and evaluating the validity of the text presented on specific websites students developed a number of important skills.

Journey Through the Digestive System (Mrs. Kriss' classes only)

This is the digestive system.  The function of the
digestive system is to break down food (i.e pizza)
into tiny chemicals that are absorbed into the
bloodstream to provide nutrients to the cells.

What is the path food takes as it travels through the digestive system? What "hazards" or "dangers" does it face? How does the physical and chemical form of the food change as it travels through the system? What causes these changes?

Your assignment is to record foods journey through the digestive system. Choose to be creative by personifying the food and the journey but don't lose the details. Illustrations are a great way to enhance the story.

You have until Thursday 6 November to record and publish the journey to your blog.

Science: The Body Systems

Science:

In Science class students have been exploring  the human body systems.  Students have explored seven major systems:  digestive, circulatory, respiratory, nervous, skeletal, muscular, and excretory systems.   Students have made many observations, asked questions, and conducted scientific research and discussion in the classroom.  Students have also developed their reading and writing skills in science class by reading and writing about the steps food, blood, and oxygen take on their journey through the human body.  We are learning that each system has a very different role within the human body, but all system work together in order to keep our bodies functioning properly.

Math Unit 3

We are currently working on Unit 3 in math class.  Here are the goals for this unit.
The Unit 3 test is scheduled for the week of October, 20th.

·         Measure angles.

·         Identify types of angles (acute, obtuse, right,  straight, and reflex.)

·         Identify place value in numbers to billions.

·         Draw types of triangles. (equilateral, isosceles, scalene, and right.)

·         Identify types of triangles and compare properties.

·         Compare the properties of polygons.

·         Determine angle measures based on relationship between angles. 

·         Create and define tessellations.

·         Round numbers to the nearest ten, tenth, and whole number.

·         Know adjacent angles and opposite angles. 

·         Read a chart.

·         Complete multiplication problems.

·         Indicate whether a given number is divisible by the stated divisor or not.

Math/Science Update 8/19/2014

Math:  

Students have completed the Unit 1 test.  Please look for the marked test and Unit 1 Profile Sheet in your child’s accordion folder very soon.  Unit 2 will begin with developing estimation strategies, reviewing place value concepts, and different methods of adding and subtracting decimals. Students have now used Mathletics   Students are encouraged to log in to their Mathletics at least three times a week to check for assigned tasks.  At this time, students should have completed all unit 1 tasks.  Unit 2 tasks will be assigned over the next few weeks.  We have also begun using EDM online where students can practice new concepts and computation skills through a variety of math games.  Students enjoyed playing Factor Captor online during Unit 1.  

Science:

Students will begin with chapter 1 in the science book this week. Some of the questions we will answer over the next few weeks include:  what are cells, how living things are made of cells, and why cells have different jobs.  Students will be reading from the science book, looking at cells in microscopes, and playing a game called Cell Mates to learn more about cells. Important vocabulary covered this week: cell, microscopic, organism, cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, protist.
