Tiete Field Trip

The Tiete fieldtrip is here!

Here are a few guidelines and reminders:

  • Please make sure your child is at school at 6:30 am on Wednesday March 25th at the bus parking lot. The buses will leave at 7:00 sharp.
  • You may follow their activities on Instagram!! search for fifthgraded and ask to follow.
  • We will be back to school on Friday approximately 4:15. Ms. Lissa will be sending updates if this time changes significantly.

Money/Extra Expenses: We suggest the amount between R$ 20,00-30,00 for incidental expenses, such as snacks on the boat.  There is absolutely no need for more money than that.  Since students will be responsible for their own belongings, it is advised to bring only this amount.

Other Electronics: Students will have “down time” on the long bus rides.  For this reason, they are welcome to bring personal music players that are CLEARLY MARKED WITH A NAME.

Valuables: Please do not pack anything you or your child would miss (expensive jewelry, extra money, etc.).

Documents:  All students will need a copy of an identification card such as RG, Passport, RNE, etc.  Teachers will be responsible for holding on to these documents for the students.

Math/Science Update 1/29

MATH

Welcome to the second semester of 5th grade.  Students just completed their study of unit 5 in math class where they reviewed the meanings of fractions, decimals and percent notations for rational numbers.  We focused on the conversion among these notations, often emphasizing the fact that embedded in every fraction is a division problem.  These fractions concepts will be further explored in the latter half of unit 6 which we will begin today.  We will start reviewing data landmarks and methods for organizing data.  Students will be provided with a variety of experiences with displaying and analyzing data.

SCIENCE

We are in the midst of exploring geology in science class.  We are asking the questions:
What is Below Our Feet? How Does It Get There?  Through readings, videos and rock and mineral observations, students are learning about the properties of rocks and minerals and how rocks form and change over time.

Puberty

Dear Parents,

Puberty is an inevitable phase in which everyone goes through, the transition between child and adulthood. It’s a time of many changes, both physically and emotionally. It’s a period filled with new challenges.

During the following weeks, the 5th grade students will be learning about the physical, social and emotional changes related to puberty. We will also discuss other topics such as personal hygiene, healthy habits (nutrition, rest and exercise) and peer pressure. Click on the links to access the girls’ and boys’ booklets containing information that will be discussed in class.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this issue or would like to know more information about the material that will be covered in class, please contact me via email, carla.maia@graded.br or phone, 3747-4800, Ext. 429.

Self-Esteem

Share with Cassie.blogspot.com
Self-esteem is how we value ourselves and how valuable we think we are to others.  Self-esteem affects nearly every part of our lives, including our trust in others, our relationships, and our performance in various areas.

A healthy self- esteem is important for many reasons.  If we have a healthy self-
esteem:
  • We are more likely to take positive risks and avoid taking negative risks.
  • We are less likely to give into peer pressure and more likely to stick up for what we believe.
  • We are able to recognize and feel proud of our accomplishments.
  • We are persistent even when things are difficult.
  • We have the strength to deal with challenges.
  • We demonstrate the flexibility to deal with changes in life.
  • We set higher goals for him/herself and strive to reach them.

The following are recommendations to build and/or maintain a healthy self-esteem.
  • Surround yourself with people that are kind, recognize your positive qualities, and help you to succeed.
  • Be kind, polite, and recognize others’ talents and positive qualities.
  • Set difficult but realistic goals and create a plan to meet them.
  • Use positive self-talk.
  • Talk about your feelings openly with trusted individuals when faced with challenges and difficulties.

Attached is a brochure for children about Self-Esteem.  A copy of this brochure can be picked up on the Counseling Bulletin Board.

Thank you,
Carla Maia

Learning Celebration on November 25th

Dear Parents,

You are invited to to celebrate our learning on November 25th at 9:00 am in the Black Box Theater. We will kickoff the celebration with a presentation and then students will share their learning and final products.

The 5th grade has been busy working a science unit that required students to research health practices/advice that are controversial even within the medical profession. For example: running is good for you or eating meat is bad for you.
Students then connected their learning about the healthy statement back to a body system.

Along with their science books, three health experts who have graciously lent their time to talk to our students about their research projects, and websites such as Webmd, the MayoClinic, KidsHealth the students discovered a lot of information about their healthy statement.  Through identifying their initial statement, generating focused questions, conducting the research, and evaluating the validity of the text presented on specific websites students developed a number of important skills.

Please mark your calendars. We look forward to seeing you.

Managing Emotions

Children enjoy feeling happy. When children feel happy they generally act out in positive ways by smiling, sharing kind words and using a positive demeanor.  But at times, children experience more uncomfortable feelings that are not as easy to handle.  Some of these uncomfortable feelings include frustration, sadness, confusion, disappointed, anger, or embarrassment.  A child may experience these feelings because he/she is being teased, hurt or threatened, or maybe this is happening to someone they care about.  A child may experience an uncomfortable feeling because he/she lost at a game, feel something is unfair, got a bad grade, is having difficulty understanding, is feeling left out, etc….  Children experience these feelings in different ways and for different reasons, it is a normal part of life.  Some signals that the body gives off during an uncomfortable feeling may be headache, stomachache, shortness of breath, crying, tight jaw, tightening of muscles, face turning red, and/or clenching of the fists.

When children have difficulty coping with uncomfortable feelings they might react in negative ways such as teasing, calling names, acting out aggressively, or withdrawing from others.  It is important to help children identify more appropriate ways of managing their uncomfortable feelings.  Some positive coping strategies are: deep belly-breathing; counting and positive self-talk. Engaging in physical activity, drawing, taking a walk, taking a bubble bath, talking to a trusted adult and/or listening to music can be healthy alternatives to deal with these uncomfortable emotions.

Student Led Conferences in the 5th grade

The Fifth-Grade is very excited to welcome all parents and students into our classrooms for student-led conferences on Thursday, October 16th and Friday, October 17th. Students will lead the conference. During the conference students will showcase their work from the 1st quarter, set goals for the rest of the semester, and reflect on their learning so far this school year.

Students and parents will visit both the math and science classroom and the language arts and social studies classroom. The conference will begin in your child’s homeroom classroom. In Mr. Ro and Mrs. Kriss’s classroom, students will visit a math and science station. In Ms. Kintzer and Ms. Pendse’s classroom, students will share their learning from language arts and social studies class. Portuguese stations will be available in every classroom. During the conference, students will be completing the student-led conference passport. These will be available to all students as they arrive into the classroom. There will be a box available at the door of each classroom for the passports to be turned in at the end of the conference.

During the conference, there will be more than one family in the classroom. Your child’s teacher will be circulating from station to station ready to assist and facilitate the conversation. Plan on spending about five minutes at each station and please remember to visit both your child’s math and science classroom as well as your child’s language arts and social studies classroom. After the classroom visit, we encourage parents and students to visit the art, music, and PE rooms. We kindly request that siblings color just outside of the classroom or play at the playground. Childcare will be provided at the Pre-Primary playground or Ballet room if it is raining.

If you haven't had a chance to sign up for a conference yet, please do so at your convenience. There are still several slots available. Have a great weekend.

A Message From Graded's Nurses

All students that visit the nurse’s office are required to “sign-in” through the Health Kiosk upon their arrival. This means the students will input their name and the reason they came to the nurse’s office on the computer, with the nurse’s assistance. The nurses evaluate the child and then update the Nurse’s Visit form to indicate what action was taken to treat the child’s symptom or complaint. An automatic notification will be sent to the parents providing the information from the Nurse Visit form. The school nurses will not contact parents by telephone for minor cuts, scrapes, bruises, or complaints. However, they will continue to call parents for more complicated injuries, permission to medicate for fevers and/or headaches, and/or persistent symptoms that may require further medical attention.

Please take time to update any medical information about your child and/or medications that nurses are authorized to administer to your child. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact the school nurses, Juliana or Daiane, at 3747-4846. The nurse’s office hours are 7:30 am to 6:00 pm.

The Secret to Making New Friends

http://d2c.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Colorful-Friendship-Clip-Wallpaper-for-Preschool-Kindergarten-Classroom-Decoration-Design-Ideas.jpg

Friends are important! At times, your child may want to be alone and do things on his/her own and that is okay.  But, having friends helps your child learn cooperation, empathy, trustworthiness, respect, generosity, and compassion while making their life more fun. Having friends can make your child feel included, happy, loved, trusted, confident and worthy.

It is not always easy to make new friends.  But here are some tips to help your child take the first steps. Encourage your child to:
  • Use words and phrases to invite others to play
  • Invite someone over to play
  • Use friendly words and behaviors, such as smiling, giving compliments, listening
  • Show interest in others with words and actions

Relationships with friends can be difficult to manage at times.  In order to maintain healthy friendships it is important that children practice being kind, honest, fair, and openly expressing their feelings in positive ways.  Next month, the counseling topic will be managing emotions.

Attached is a pamphlet for children about How to Make and Keep Friends.  A copy of this pamphlet can be picked up on the Counseling Bulletin Board.

Language Arts/Social Studies News

We are very excited about the work we are going to be doing in Language Arts this year. We will be starting book clubs this week. We will be working closely with texts as we examine “How do authors use stories to give us insight into our own lives?”  In addition, we will be exploring the basic plot structure of stories, and will look deeply into story elements such as character and setting.  Beginning next week, we will begin to establish routines for book club meetings.

In Writing, we will begin to establish routines for Writer's Workshop and start generating ideas for small moments.

Finally, in Social Studies, we will begin our study of early man’s origins and migration patterns. Students will be shown a variety of maps, videos, and text that give support to various theories of how man came to live in the Americas.
