TTCOCD Chapter 1-5 Open Response Question

Answer two out of the four questions by using evidence from the novel.  Your answers should be written in complete sentences. Please refer to the rubric below to make sure that you are meeting expectations.

1. In your opinion, who should Charlotte trust?  Zachariah or Captain Jaggery?  Why?

2. Descriptions of the weather can help us to understand the mood of a story.  Find an example of how Avi uses the weather to describe the mood in TTCOD.  Copy the quote and explain how it helps you to understand the mood.

3. Do you think that Charlotte should be blamed or held accountable for her attitudes and behaviors towards the crew?  (Think about how she feels about the crew vs. how she feels about Captain Jaggery.)

4. Why does Charlotte decide not to tell Captain Jaggery about who gave her the knife?  What does that tell you about her character strengths?
